THE WEATHER STATION PROJECT IV

Milan, Italy
March, 2020

The  ‘Weather Station Project IV’ is part of an ongoing project that investigates the implications and connections between Architecture, Weather, Energy and Form, and specifically, focuses on how space and shelter are developed as a response to weather patterns.

The ‘Weather Station Project IV’ proposed in the Early Spring for the Comune di Milan, focused on creating exterior environments in response to the 2020 Covid pandemic. The proposals were conceptual studies of how exterior space in the city of Milan could be occupied to allow for recreation and dining in public space. These lightweight structures are quickly installed, imagined for parking lots, reapporatited roadways and sidewalks, and differ from other tactical urban approaches due to their reliance on natural materials, water and planting, as well as for their transformable and reusable nature.

The  various elements of the ‘Weather Station Project IV’ create micro-climates and micro-weather conditions – these elements can be seen as ‘mini-machines for living’, and each element literally functions in a way which simulates natural weather phenomenon.

Our proposal focused on producing a series of micro-architectural environments which are self sufficient and which create micro-climates and micro-weather conditions – these can be seen as ‘mini-machines for living’, and each different element literally functions as a different weather phenomenon.

Thus we created ‘clouds’, ‘tornadoes’, ‘wind’, ‘rain’ etc.In this way, the architectures are simple but complex, primary and awkward, functional and emotional – the weather station project is highly modern and primitive in nature at the same time.
