CORPORATE OFFICES
Corporate Offices
Florence, Italy
This office interior, designed for a large international corporate in 2011, continues our research into corporate specific work place environments.
The spatial organisation, choice of fixtures, furniture systems and finishes is designed specifically to reflect the corporate’s history, culture and manufacturing practices entailing developing and commerialization of semiconductor and computer technology.
The corporate is the third largest manufacturer of semiconductors worldwide after Intel and Samsung, the second largest supplier of chips for cellular handsets after Qualcomm, and the worlds largest producer of digital signal processors and analog semiconductors.
Although the corporate is a giant in their field, they are non-the-less relatively unknown as a brand after largely divesting in consumer products and commodities, areas for which they were so well known in the heyday of Modernism (50’s – 80’s) . investing instead in engineering and research of micro electronics.
The corporate is a key International supplier of the vital components which drive the industry.
In 2011, the corporate ranked 175 in the Fortune 500.
The question of what is an appropriate environment for a relatively ‘invisible‘ company primarily dedicated to ‘behind the scenes’ innovation and research led TPA to produce a series of diagrams which reflected the business organisation of the corporate, which were subsequently transformed into spatial organisational models and then, into form.
The rational and simplistic work environments attempt to mimic the processes and organisation of supply chain models. The corporate is an extremely efficient company, and their work environments necessarily reflect that efficiency, transparency and practicality, although in a comfortable, relaxed and contemporary manner.
The values of this model are perhaps best described in the prophetic ‘Six Memos for the Next Millennium’, a book based on a series of lectures written by Italo Calvino in 1985.
The memos, called the ‘American Lessons’, are lectures on the values which Calvino felt were important for the coming millennium.
The values which Calvino highlights are:
Lightness
Quickness
Exactitude
Visibility
Multiplicity
Calvino passed away before completing and delivering the lectures.
All that is known of the sixth lecture is that it was to be on Consistency.
