MOTOROLA / EUROPEAN CONSUMER DESIGN CENTER

Milan, Italy

The Motorola European Consumer Design Center was designed and executed in 2001. The Design Center, located in an historic industrial site, was conceived as  innovative work environment and constituted the largest Design studio for the American corporation outside of the their home base in Chicago.

In order to respect the industrial shell and preserve the historic buildings external perimeter, floor plate and exposed ceiling, Tim Power Architects decision was to create a simple, strong central elements detached from the shell, which contained all functions required for an Office Environment (aside from the open office functions) : storage needs, meeting and break areas, mechanical and electrical services and as well as project areas.

This micro-architecture ( called the Super-Box ) was constructed in steel, and clad in tinted ash veneered plywood.

Custom furniture and lighting elements were developed with Unifor, Staverton ( later purchased by Knoll International ) and Flos.
